The History Of The Teddy Bear
The History of Teddy Bears
Teddy Bears all started because President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear, which in the long run got him the nickname “Teddy.” Yes, it's correct there are toys and games that had bears on them, however they didn't actually have stuffed stuffed bears before 1902. There are several different stories to know what actually happened, but it seems like Theodore Roosevelt went out hunting and ended up shooting nothing. The men he was with wanted him to shoot and take something back as a result of his troubles and came across a little bear cub and told him to shoot it. I don't fully understand if he didn't want to shoot it since it had no mother, was injured, and connected to a tree or just for it's size. When he refused to shoot the bear all of them joked about it, one man even drew a cartoon of “Teddy” with a bear cub.
The interest in Stuffed Bears would become very popular in society. A small shopkeeper, Morris Mitchom, recognized the possible income and displayed them in his store window. Morris sent the president one of the bears his wife made and asked the president if he could name them “Teddy's Bears.” The bears were unlike any toy bears that had been made; this bear was cute and didn't frighten away children. Once accepted, he started designing the Stuffed Bears inside of a new shop known as, “Ideal Toy Company". It's not known who actually created the very first Teddy Bear, but we honestly do know it was Morris that asked permission.
Clear over in Germany was another company making Teddy Bears. “Steiff Company” was creating bears that really seemed like the true thing. The proprietor, Margarete Steiff had a nephew that would often sketch pictures of bears in the Stuttgart Zoo and show them off to her, this inspired her to create her own. Her creations wouldn't be discovered by the Americans until 1903 at a toys and games fair; which had them ordering over 3000 bears.
Teddies make a comeback
One can see why Teddies became so famous, if it really wasn't for their cute expressions and cuddliness I believe they would've gone extinct. Today, you would possibly see Stuffed Bears in a bedroom, a store window, in commercials, cartoons or simply in books. Teddy Bears are everywhere and it's all because of one man refusing to shoot an innocent bear cub.
You thought the 80s were bad, you hated the pants, plastic bracelets and big hair but you did love those Teddy Bears. Previously it was sad when they all seem to disappear from the stores and no one could find them anymore. Well, you know what? The original style Teddy Bears have returned and are also looking better than they did before. You're going to have Care Bears, Gummie Bears, Care Bear Cousins, Paddington Bear, and even Teddy Ruxpin.
To the ones who would possibly not remember, Gummie Bears were the Stuffed Bears which were always aiming to do some good. There are seven main characters: Grammi, Cubbi, Sunni, Zummi, Tummi and then Gruffi. The cartoon was founded by Disney and first aired in 1985, but would end in 1990. It was an established cartoon in the 80s and enjoyed a little lower than 100 episodes overall, the Gummies are slowly appearing in stores.
Care Bears were a favourite of mine; these little Teddy Bears were always stepping into some type of trouble. Every single one of the Teddy Bears sported their own personal special symbol upon their tummy and had some kind of special ability. They would always have to return together and conduct the “CareBear Stare” with the intention to get everything to return to normal and save Care-a-Lot. The Care Bear Cousins soon emerged following when the Care Bears were released; at first the Cousins did not have any symbols. The bears actually appeared on cards prior to being aired on the television in 1985, the show lasted only 3 years. In 1996 Bedtime, Tenderheart and Cheer Bear hit the shelves again but it wouldn't be until 2000s that the family of Care Bears would get a resurected life.
Even Teddy Ruxpin came back. In fact he's been brought back to life four separate times. Released in 1985, again by Playskool; Yes! Entertainment bought the rights in 1998 and he was out again. It wasn't until 2005, when Backpack Toys re-introduced him around the world incorporating the latest technology. This would really be time he would finally emerge to stay and he hasn't died since.
There's a trend happening lately and old Stuffed Bears are coming back from near extinction. I basically hope they’re here to remain. Might you have any favourite old Stuffed Bears?
Gund has been around the Stuffed Bear making business for over 100 years now; it is among the first companies to ever produce a Stuffed Bear in the USA. Mainly because that Adolph Gund had the need to develop the best of everything in life, he made sure his Teddy Bears did too. His bears needed to be created with high-quality material, which is the reason they were made with mohair fur. He didn't just stop there though; the workers creating these lovely bears had to be the best craftsmen in the area. The golden ticket for the Gund Bears has always been their trademark of under-stuffing the bear; this created a softer Teddy Bear.
The company started creating Teddies in Norwalk, Ct. Adolph never did have family which is probably why he sought out someone before he passed away to sell his company to.
Adolph Gund directly before his passing he sold his business to Jacob Swedlin but under one restriction, the company always needed to be called, “Gund.” Jacob would be the person that introduced everyone to the licensing of cartoon characters similar to Mickey Mouse or Snoopy. Jacob would pass down the company to his daughter Rita and her husband Herbert Raiffe; both of them knew to not ever change the company name.
The corporation is continuing to thrive under Herbert and Rita. In 1977 their son Bruce Raiffe would join the firm. The corporation goes on growing today, always guaranteeing to maintain its original name when it goes from one individual to another. Although the company thrives possessing latest Teddies, they've never forgotten the guy that got them started and have absolutely always continued to make use of safety with the toys and good quality for making all their toys and games items just like he did.
Comforting Teddies for Newborns
When it comes to bringing home a newborn, very few expects it be as hard as it often might be. In the hospital he slept similar to angel, but once in your own home he just wouldn't stop screaming. He refused whatever you gave him, even the pacifier came out immediately after putting in and as for anything else…it just didn't work. Choosing the right comfort for your newborn might be very frustrating at times, however there are particular Stuffed Bears that may help.
When your baby can not seem to sleep, I suggest the Womb Sounds Mommy Bear. Inside your tummy all the baby heard was your heartbeat and this time suddenly he hears everything around him. This can frighten some babies, while some never seem fazed because of it. The Womb Sounds Mommy Bear actually mimics the sound of a heart beating. Place the bear inside the crib near your son or daughter and he'll soon nod off.
Blanket Stuffed Bears are small fleece blankets that have a Teddy Bear attached from the arms up. The bottom of the blanket is made of satin, that makes it soft just soft enough for baby to chew on.
Keel Toys Nursery Bear with shirt that is embroidered, “baby boy” or “baby girl”; is a very soft and fluffy yellow Stuffed Bear. His feet read “Hug Me” and it appears that his arms are stretched out to you.
Wabbanub pacifiers have little Teddies sewed onto the pacifier backing. Now, those pacifiers shouldn't be flying across the room when mom walks away. Each pacifier includes a different type of Teddy Bear to choose between.
Whatever toys and games product suits your son or daughter will probably be the one you have to get, all things considered you wish your baby to obtain just as much sleep as possible, so why not get your newborn a Stuffed Bear to comfort him.
Over the years the collection of Teddies will grow and become life-long keepsakes.
