WASHING QUILTS
These instructions are for 100% cotton quilts which are designed and destined to be LOVED. (Used by babies, children, adults)
DO NOT USE these washing instructions for heirloom or antique quilts. Heirloom & antique quilt care should be left to the professional. Before attempting to clean an antique quilt consult with a professional.
Do not dry clean 100% cotton hand crafted quilts.
Machine wash in cool/tepid water (cold or hot water is not good) with a mild detergent. Orvis, Dreft, Ivory are mild soaps which are good for washing 100% cotton quilts. Use a liquid detergent or if your soap is powder make sure it is dissolved before you put it in with the quilt.
Don't use the soaps which are intended for delicate fabrics. They tend to make the colors run in 100% cotton fabrics. Don't use bleach.
Put a little white vinegar in the wash water the first time you wash the quilt to help if there should be a bleeding situation. Blues and reds are colors to pay attention to for a bleeding situation. You can test the fabric by taking a damp white piece of cloth and rub it gently on the suspect fabric. If color is transferred from the suspect fabric to the white cloth, bleeding might occur.
Use the gentle/delicate cycle and remove the quilt as soon as it is done washing.
If there has been any bleeding of the fabrics DON'T put in the dryer. Keep rinsing with cool water until the bleeding comes out. There are products at your local quilt shop to help if the bleeding is intense. The quilt can be put in the dryer at LOW temperature to get most of the moisture out and then taken out of the dryer and lain flat to complete the drying process. Don't hang over a line to dry.
Don't iron. After the quilt has been washed a few times you don't have to be as careful in washing and drying as you are the first few times but just know that taking care in washing will extend the life of a hand crafted quilt, even if it is used often.
Quilted wall hangings only get dusty, they don't get dirty. To clean just lay flat on a sheet and vacuum. Put a nylon stocking over the nozzle of the vacumn to protect the any loose threads or fabrics from being pulled or stretched.
The batting used in hand made quilts is usually 80/20, meaning 80% cotton, 20% polyester under the labels of Warm & Natural or Hobbs Premium or 100% Organic Classic Cotton or a Bamboo Blend of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton. These too shrink and it helps to know the batting content.
100% cotton SHRINKS! How much shrinkage varies with each manufacturer. Hand crafted quilts made from 100% cotton that have been washed will have a "scrunched" look to them, much like the look of antique quilts. THIS IS NORMAL! I don't like to be rude but sometimes I just must be. If you don't like "scrunched" look don't buy a 100% cotton quilt. Even with prewashed fabric some shrinkage will occur.
